Enabling remote access in ms sql server on ubuntu (18.04) desktop?

I have been trying for a while and and have been running into a brick wall. I am currently running ms-sql-server-2019 developer edition on my Ubuntu desktop. The overall goal is for me to be able to access the databases remotely (not on local network) on my macbook air. I have gotten to the point where I can access the sql-server through ssh off and on the local network. I am also able to use pyodbc on my macbook to connect and pull data from the sql-server on the ubuntu, as long as I am on the local network. Unfortunately I am not able to do the same (access the database from my mac) off the local network. Please provide some help if possible, as this has been a headache and I have not gotten far… Also I code in Python. Thank you in advance community!
